Fact # 6 – What year did every section at camp have a Head Counsellor of its own?

50 Facts - Summer Camp Montana

Q.

This year sees the introduction of the ‘Champions’ section to International Summer Camp Montana, and, an additional Head Counsellor.  However, it has not always been the case that there was an individual Head Counsellor for each section.  Do you know which was the first year where Juniors, Pioneers and Seniors all had their own Head Counsellor at International Summer Camp Montana?

In addition, can name all those people who have been the Senior Head Counsellor?

We will reveal the answer to this week’s ‘Fascinating Fact’ in next week’s blog!

Answer to last week’s Fact – In which year did the Studer-Mathieu family purchase La Moubra?

A.

The Studer-Mathieu family first established La Moubra in the summer of 1963 as the permanent home of International Summer Camp Montana.  However, it was not until 1969 that the family bought the building.  A rental agreement was in place for Summer Camp from 1963-1965 and then for both Summer and Winter seasons during 1966-1969.

The owners of camp during the years of 1963-1969 had speculated that Sion (very close to Crans-Montana) would win the race to host the 1976 Winter Olympics.  However, the decision in 1969 resulted in Denver being chosen as the host city for 1976 and at this point the Studer-Mathieu family made an offer to buy the La Moubra building and grounds.  This offer was accepted and International Summer Camp Montana has been here ever since!

The story is not quite complete though.  In a strange twist, the citizens of Denver held a public vote and decided against hosting the Olympics in their city.  Therefore, the games were moved to Innsbrück, Austria; a city which had hosted the Winter Games only 12 years earlier, in 1964!
