FACT # 5 – In which year did the Studer-Mathieu family purchase La Moubra?

50 Facts - Summer Camp Montana

Q.

As we learned previously, Rudy Studer established International Summer Camp Montana at La Moubra in 1963.  However, he did not buy the building immediately, but instead rented it for a number of years from the owners at the time.

Do you know in which year the Studer-Mathieu family purchased La Moubra?

We will reveal the answer to this week’s ‘Fascinating Fact’ in next week’s blog!

Answer to last week’s Fact – When was La Moubra built and what has it functioned as in the past?

A.

La Moubra has been the permanent home of International Summer Camp Montana since 1963, however the building has been used for a few different purposes during its lifetime.

The construction of La Moubra was completed in 1927 and for the next 25 years it was used as a private clinic for those patients who suffered from lung disease.  Then in 1952 it was purchased by Belgian owners, again used as a clinic until 1955.  During these 3 years it was a place where workers (from the previous Belgian colony of The Congo) came to undertake recuperation from lung disease.  The use of La Moubra then changed from the medical to hospitality industry during 1955 when the new owners decided to convert the building to be used as a hotel.  The hotel remained on the site until 1961 before La Moubra shut it’s doors for 2 years and remained vacant.  Of course that was until Rudy Studer visited Crans-Montana, rented La Moubra and established International Summer Camp Montana there.  And the rest, as they say, is history………!
