Last week’s fact – How many Pioneer Head Counsellors can you name?

The Pioneer section at camp has had it’s own Head Counsellor since 1974.  This was when a decision was made to ensure that all sections (Juniors, Pioneers and Seniors) had their own Head Counsellor.  The very first Head Counsellor for the Pioneers was an American named Paul Gilman, from 1974 – 1976.  In 1977 & 1978 it was the turn of an Englishman named Tim O’Flynn.

Then, in 1979 it was the first time that Danny Herberich was to be Pioneer Head Counsellor.  Danny has filled this position for a total of 21 years!  Firstly, he was Pioneer Head Counsellor from 1979 until 1997; he also was in charge of the Pioneers in 2009 and 2010.  Danny will of course be the Champion Head Counsellor for the summer of 2011!

The fourth person to have been Pioneer Head Counsellor was Mark Schapiro.  Mark is from the United States and was also a former camper!  He held this position in 1998 & 1999.  Following on from Mark was Stefano Graziano from Italy.  Stefano was the Pioneer Head Counsellor from 2000 until 2008, after which it was Danny’s turn again!

Finally, the new Pioneer Head Counsellor for the summer of 2011 will be Kristen Taillon.  Kristen is from Montreal, Canada and has worked at ISCM for many summers.  It is worth mentioning  too that she will be the first female Pioneer Head Counsellor!

International Summer Camp Montana certainly lives up to its ‘international’ name; campers come from all over the World to have an unforgettable experience at La Moubra!  However, it’s not just the campers who are international.  The staff come from many different countries too!
